W. Clark Wolf argues in his new book Hegel's Inversion of Philosophy: The Metaphysics of the Made (2026) that Hegel's mature project constitutes an inversion of the philosophical tradition: whereas that tradition takes mind-independent nature as the measure of the real, Wolf shows — drawing on the Science of Logic and in particular the Doctrine of the Concept — that for Hegel it is thought's knowledge of its own products, not the mind's grasp of a given nature, that serves as the paradigm of genuine knowledge. Geist, not nature, sets the standard. The humanly made world — language, law, institutions, art — is not relegated to the margins of serious metaphysics but placed at its very centre.

In this year's Author Meets Critics Workshop at the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Stuttgart, we will engage with Wolf's arguments together with him, on the basis of critical interventions by James Kreines (Claremont McKenna College), Andrew Werner (University of Houston), Robb Dunphy (University of Sussex), and Daniel LeBlanc (Yale University), as well as by the organisers Giuliano Infantino and Ana Vieyra (University of Stuttgart).
